The High Court of Bangladesh has directed that all marriages and divorces be registered digitally to ensure transparency and prevent legal disputes.
The ruling was delivered by a Division Bench comprising Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Mohammad Asif Hasan. The hearing on the writ petition was conducted by Advocate Ishrat Hasan, assisted by Advocate Tanzila Rahman.
According to Advocate Ishrat Hasan, the digital registration system will:
- Strengthen family security and women’s protection.
- Prevent child marriages and fraud related to marriages and divorces.
- Ensure legal transparency and ease of proof in marital matters.
- Minimize issues such as secret marriages, multiple hidden marriages, concealment of prior marital status, and complexities in proving divorces.
Uphold citizens’ social dignity and trust within society.
The petition was filed on 4 March 2021 on behalf of four aggrieved parties by Advocate Ishrat Hasan in the Supreme Court, leading to this historic judicial directive.
This step is expected to modernize civil registration, provide a secure database, and facilitate legal and social accountability in marital affairs.
