Feeling dizzy after an earthquake is a common physical reaction. However, it is important not to ignore these signals from your body. Sudden natural disasters like earthquakes not only shake the Earth but also impact our body and mind.
As a result, even after the earthquake stops, many people may experience dizziness, body tremors, or feel that their surroundings are abnormal. If this happens, seeking medical attention may be necessary. But why does this occur? Let’s find out.
During an earthquake, the organs that control our balance—eyes, ears, and body—go into alert mode or heightened vigilance. Even after the shaking stops, the brain retains the memory of the vibrations for a while. This can cause confusion in the body’s balance system.
A 2022 study by the University of Tokyo found that during a strong earthquake, our vestibular system—which maintains body balance—becomes suddenly overactive. Therefore, even after the earthquake ends, the system continues sending signals of movement for a short period, causing dizziness.
According to the Stanford Psychology Lab, during moments of danger or panic, cortisol levels rise rapidly. High levels of this hormone can lead to lightheadedness, dizziness, or nausea. Even if there is no actual shaking after the earthquake, anxiety can cause sensations such as light-headedness, difficulty walking, or pressure in the head.
Furthermore, a 2023 study published in Nature Human Behaviour found that when people are exposed to prolonged shaking, the brain perceives the movement as real for several minutes. Therefore, even after the vibrations stop, the body may continue to feel slight swaying. Feeling dizzy after an earthquake is a normal bodily response.
This is not always a cause for concern. If dizziness decreases within 10–30 minutes, improves with water intake, or goes away after rest or sleep, there is no need to worry. This is a normal vestibular reaction.
However, if dizziness persists for more than 24 hours, is accompanied by repeated vomiting, fatigue, or difficulty walking, consulting a doctor is necessary.
What to Do After an Earthquake:
-
Avoid standing immediately, as it may worsen balance. Sit down and close your eyes to help the vestibular system calm faster.
-
Drink water gradually. Anxiety and dehydration can increase dizziness, so take a few sips of water.
-
Take deep breaths. Inhale for 4 seconds and exhale for 6 seconds. This helps reduce stress hormones and calms the brain.
-
Eat something quickly. Low blood glucose can cause dizziness, so consuming biscuits or fruit can be helpful.
