Stomach-related issues are not uncommon in Bangladesh. Almost every household has someone suffering from gastritis, indigestion, or heartburn. Heavy meals often cause gas, abdominal pain, and discomfort, which many consider normal everyday problems.
However, doctors warn that these seemingly mild symptoms can sometimes be early indicators of a serious disease: stomach (gastric) cancer. The challenging aspect of this cancer is that its early signs are difficult to recognize, leading many patients to discover it late, when the disease has progressed.
Mouth and Skin Changes as Early Indicators
Experts note that some symptoms of stomach cancer may appear not only in the abdomen but also on the face and skin. Changes in facial skin can sometimes signal the disease.
Medical research shows that gastric cancer can cause a skin condition called “Papul erythroderma of Ofuji”, which appears as small, raised bumps or papules. These may sometimes turn into sores or cause the affected skin to peel and itch.
Although these symptoms can occur anywhere on the body, a study published in the Chinese Journal of Cancer Research suggests that the face is a more likely area to display such signs.
Other Common Symptoms of Stomach Cancer
- Complications with mucus and lymph nodes
- Sudden loss of appetite
- Heartburn and stomach disturbances
- Nausea or vomiting
- Low hemoglobin levels leading to fatigue
If any of these symptoms appear, it is crucial not to ignore them. Early medical consultation is vital to detect and treat the condition effectively.
