Police have arrested a housemaid named Ayesha from the Nalchity area of Barishal in connection with the brutal murders of Laila Afroz, 48, and her daughter, Nafisa Lawal Binte Aziz, at their apartment in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. The arrest was confirmed on Wednesday by DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman, who stated that legal procedures regarding the case are currently underway.
The horrifying incident occurred on Monday, December 8, when Laila and her daughter were found dead inside their seventh-floor flat on Shahjahan Road in Mohammadpur. Their bodies were laid to rest in Natore the following day, on December 9.
Key evidence emerged from CCTV footage of the building, which captured a woman leaving the apartment shortly after the killings. She was seen wearing a school uniform and carrying a bag, raising immediate suspicion. According to police investigations, Nafisa suffered multiple deep wounds on her neck, while her mother, Laila, sustained several injuries across her body. Authorities confirmed that both victims were attacked with a sharp weapon by a perpetrator who wore gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints.
Further analysis of the CCTV footage revealed a disturbing detail: Ayesha was seen entering the apartment dressed in a burqa but later exiting disguised in Nafisa’s school uniform and wearing a mask, suggesting a calculated attempt to evade identification.
Family sources reported that Nafisa’s father, Azizul Islam, had left home around 7:00 am for school-related duties and returned at approximately 11:30 am, only to discover the bodies of his wife and daughter. Shockingly, Ayesha had been employed as a housemaid just four days before the murders and had unrestricted access to the apartment.
A case regarding the double homicide was officially filed at Mohammadpur Police Station on Tuesday, December 9, as the investigation continues to unfold.
