Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained the parents of suspected shooter Faisal Karim Masud in connection with the attempted murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inkilab Mancha and a prospective parliamentary candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency. During the operation, RAB recovered three firearms, 11 rounds of ammunition, two magazines, and a knife.

RAB-2 said that the weapons and ammunition were recovered during a raid conducted Tuesday night in the West Agargaon area under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, near the residence of Faisal’s elder sister, Jiasmin. Faisal’s father, Humayun Kabir, was arrested from Narsingdi, while his mother was brought to the RAB office for questioning.

Additional Superintendent of Police of RAB-2, Shamsul Islam, said that significant information was obtained by analyzing CCTV footage from around Faisal’s sister’s residence. The footage shows that on the morning of December 12, Faisal and an accomplice left the house on a motorcycle. Later that day at around 4:05 pm, Faisal, his accomplice, his mother, and his nephew were seen retrieving some items from an open space between two buildings. In the evening, Faisal and his accomplice left the area in a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw.

Based on this information, a RAB-2 operational team conducted a raid in the open space between the two buildings and recovered two loaded magazines, 11 rounds of ammunition, and a knife.

RAB also reported that from the residence of the accused shooter’s sister, they seized a tablet, an Android smartphone, an old button mobile phone, two national identity cards, five cheques from different institutions, 15 cheque books from various banks, six passports, and 38 loose cheque leaves.

Meanwhile, RAB said that three firearms were recovered from a pond in Narsingdi during an operation conducted on the basis of information provided by Faisal’s brother-in-law at the time of arrest of Faisal’s father, Humayun Kabir.

Director of RAB’s Legal and Media Wing, Wing Commander MZD M. Intekhhab Chowdhury, said that Faisal’s mother is being questioned at the RAB office at night and that maximum efforts are underway to arrest the prime accused in the attempted murder case along with others involved in the incident.

It is worth noting that on December 12, two assailants attempted to kill Sharif Osman Hadi by firing shots from a moving motorcycle in the Bijoynagar area of the capital. Since the incident, the accused have remained at large, and information has circulated that they have crossed the border and fled to India.

Hadi’s condition is currently critical, and he was taken to Singapore on Monday for advanced medical treatment. In connection with the incident, Inkilab Mancha Member Secretary Abdullah Jaber filed a case at Paltan Police Station on Sunday night. The case named Faisal Karim Masud and several unidentified individuals as accused and was later handed over to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (DB) for investigation.
