The army has arrested a BNP leader for allegedly extorting money at Azimpur Graveyard in Dhaka. The arrested individual is Arman Mia, who serves as Vice-President of BNP’s Ward 23.

The arrest took place on Saturday (15 November) afternoon near Azimpur Super Market, after which he was handed over to Lalbagh Police Station.

According to reports, Arman Mia and his associates demanded 5 lakh taka from contractor Sumon Chowdhury, who manages the graveyard. When Sumon refused to pay, the group threatened to close his business and even warned of potential harm.

On 26 October, the group verbally abused and threatened Sumon, later taking him to Arman’s office in the supermarket’s lower floor, where he was physically assaulted. Fearing further attacks, Sumon temporarily vacated the area.

Following advice from his family, Sumon filed a formal complaint at the police station after a few days.

Lalbagh Police Station OC Mostafa Kamal Khan stated that legal action has been taken against the arrested individual, and other suspects will be apprehended and brought under law.
