ISIS Attack in Syria Kills Two U.S. Soldiers and an Interpreter

Two U.S. soldiers and a civilian American interpreter have been killed in Syria following a sudden attack by an alleged ISIS gunman, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported. Three other U.S. soldiers were injured in the incident. Officials say the assailant was neutralized in a confrontation with U.S. forces.
The attack occurred in Palmyra, central Syria, while American troops were reportedly meeting with a key local leader. The identities of the deceased have not been released yet, pending notification of next of kin.
U.S. President Donald Trump described the assault on social media as an “ISIS attack” against the U.S. and Syria, warning that a “very severe retaliation” would follow. The Syrian government also condemned the attack.
CENTCOM characterized the incident as a “planned ambush by a lone ISIS gunman.” A Pentagon official stated preliminary assessments indicate ISIS involvement. However, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claims the assailant may have been a member of Syrian security forces. No group has claimed responsibility, and the gunman’s identity remains unknown.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell confirmed the attack took place in an area outside the control of the Syrian government. He added that the three injured U.S. personnel are in stable condition. Syrian state media reported that two Syrian security personnel were also wounded during the attack.
