In Shibbaria, Mymensingh, local residents reportedly vandalized the district office of the Awami League. The incident included breaking walls and setting tires on fire in front of the office.
The vandalism occurred on Monday (February 23) during a gathering of activists from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Sources say that the office had been locked since August 5 last year. Following the national parliamentary elections on February 12, rumors circulated that the party office would reopen. Minor cleaning activities were reportedly carried out secretly, and on February 21, a small group of Awami League leaders, led by Kazi Azad Jahan Shamim, hoisted the national flag and laid a wreath at the office. Pictures of this event circulated widely on social media, triggering public outrage.
Al Noor M. Ayas, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Jatiya Biplobi Mancha, stated, “On February 21, the banned Awami League members raised the national flag in front of their office to resume operations. We declare that in this Bangladesh, built on the blood of our martyrs, there is no place for fascist forces. We officially open this office to be used as a public toilet.”
He added that the Awami League is a banned organization involved in the killings of thousands, including student leader Shaheed Sagar, with legal proceedings ongoing. “The recent attempt by banned members to reopen the office for organizational activities will not be allowed. If necessary, the office will be demolished and converted into a public toilet,” he said.
According to local sources, the office had been built on land that was allegedly illegally seized by the Awami League, leading to prior legal disputes.
Mymensingh Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nazmus Sakib said that police arrived at the scene after receiving reports of the fire and vandalism, extinguished the flames, and restored order.
