At Dhaka University, Professor A.K.M. Jamal Uddin, an Awami League–aligned teacher from the Department of Sociology, was reportedly harassed by students while attempting to submit a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor. The incident occurred at the Social Sciences Faculty lounge around noon on Thursday, when students led by DUCSU Social Services Secretary E.B. Zubayer confronted him.
According to reports, the students claimed that Jamal Uddin and other teachers from the “Blue Team” were holding a secret meeting in the lounge. Present at the meeting were Professor Zinat Huda (Sociology), Professor Jamal Uddin, Professor Mohammad Azmal Hossain Bhuiya (Botany), among others.
A video posted on social media by Zubayer shows him blocking Jamal Uddin at the front stairs of the Sociology building, insisting, “You cannot go; during the July uprising you spoke about students’ brushfires.” Students in the background suggested calling Shahbagh police station. Amid the scuffle, Jamal Uddin’s hoodie was torn. He ran down the stairs to the central mosque, with Zubayer pursuing him. Eventually, Jamal Uddin managed to leave in a white private car, while Zubayer reportedly tried to pull him out. Other teachers also left the scene quickly.
Zubayer defended the students’ actions, claiming that the teachers had allegedly encouraged students to start brushfires during the mass uprising, and that the students wanted to hand them over to the police.
Responding to the incident, Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said that students had previously protested whenever Jamal Uddin came to campus and were assured he would not return. He added that the teachers came to submit a memorandum regarding their current situation, but the Vice-Chancellor was unavailable. They later went to the lounge for tea, where the confrontation occurred. Proctor Ahmed condemned the harassment, stating, “If teachers are attacked on the streets like this, it cannot happen in a civilized society. A formal complaint will be submitted to the Vice-Chancellor immediately.”
